About

EHMS is a non-profit organization devoted to the study and practice of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA). EHMS operates in the western side capital region of Finland, operating a dedicated training hall in Helsinki.

EHMS offers training in the following disciplines:

• Bolognese sidesword, from 16th century Italy
• German longsword, after the teachings of 14th-century fencing master Johannes Liechtenauer
• Rapier and dagger
• Saber, according to 19th century teachings by Richard Francis Burton
• Messer, according to 15th century master Johannes Lecküchner’s teachings
• Italian longsword, after the teachings of 14th-century fencing master Fiore dei Liberi
• Wrestling
• Gekiken

Instructors

The instructors at EHMS are: Mats Bergström, Jakub Dobi, Toni Heikura, Markus Koivisto, Kalle Kylmänen, Miro Lahtela, Mikko Lehto, Kristian Ruokonen, Olli Suominen, Minna Vasarainen, Ami Viholainen, Jaakko Viitanen and Ville Välimäki.

How to join

We hold beginners courses four times per year, in the spring and autumn. More information about beginners courses, as long as weekend-long intensive ones can be found on the courses page. The courses are primarily held in Finnish but instruction in English is available as well.

You are also welcome to join for a free class, in order to meet us and experience the training first hand before deciding to commit to a course! Email us at info@ehms.fi for details.

Training hall

We welcome visitors to our training from all over the world. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you are interested in traveling to train with us in Helsinki. For the sake of fairness, if you’re training with us for a month or more, we ask that you contribute to the club the same way our members do.
